One of the hardest things to do when you are getting into a diet or trying to change your eating habits is to actually resist the urge to fill yourself on junk food or unhealthy snacks when hunger strikes. When you start to eat in a healthier manner or when you restrict your calorie intake to lose weight you will certainly experience hunger and what you eat when this happens may mark your dieting success or failure. I have experienced this many times when I first tried to change my eating habits and I finally came to the conclusion that I needed to come up with some snacks that I could eat when I was hungry that would not be detrimental to my health.

Within this post I want to share with you five of the best ideas I have had for snacks that you can eat when you’re hungry that will be much healthier for you than any of the usual packaged or processed foods you would be eating otherwise. However it is important for you to realize that there is never an “all you can eat snack” and that you always need to eat in moderation, regardless of the type or actual character of the food you are eating. I would recommend you eat these snacks slowly between meals and in a manner in which you are permanently quenching your hunger but not stuffing yourself with the food. What are these snacks ? Keep reading to find out !

1. Celery Sticks with a Tomato Dip. I cut celery in sticks and then prepare a tomato dip by cutting two tomatoes in very small pieces and cooking them for a while with some salt, adding basil before serving. The sauce can be prepared in large quantities and then stored and used before serving so that you can enjoy this treat for several weeks. I strongly advice you refrain from using ketchup, mayo or any other dressings as this dip made from tomatoes and basil is very healthy as ultimately it will contribute a lot to your health and little to your calorie intake. Something very important for people who are dieting or looking for true changes in their eating habits.

2.Sweet Bell Pepper with Ground Black Pepper. I usually cut the bell pepper in stripes and then powder some black pepper over them in order to make them a little bit spicy. This is wonderful for me and the flavor of the bell pepper is something I always enjoy. Bear in mind that bell peppers are slightly irritant to the stomach so you should not eat more than one bell pepper when you prepare this healthy snack.

3. Apples with Cinnamon and Sugar. I know, I know, sugar ? Yes. A small quantity of sugar is not bad for you and adding some with cinnamon to a freshly cut apple is actually a very good idea. I usually cut two apples in slices and add some cinnamon and sugar on top (just a little bit of sugar !). I like to cut the apple slices very thinly so that I get the maximum possible surface area and then I taste each one slowly as they almost dissolve inside my mouth. It is a very good experienced overall.

4. Tomatoes with Parmesan Cheese and Oregano. This one is definitely one of my favorites. It is a very simple recipe which requires you to cut the tomatoes in half, remove the seeds , sprinkle some Parmesan cheese inside them, put them in a small toaster oven for 5-10 minutes and then sprinkle some dried oregano on top with salt and black pepper to taste. This recipe is amazing and it gives you a very tasteful treat with all the benefits of tomatoes, Parmesan cheese and oregano.

5. Fruit Jello. Usually when I am in the mood for some sweet stuff I prepare myself a dessert with jello made with some fruit inside. This is achieved by means of a layering technique. You place some jello on whatever mold you are using, then let it set, add some fruit cut in small squares, add jello, let it set, etc. I usually add mango, apples, bananas and pineapples for a very tasteful and healthy treat. You can always prepare large quantities and eat the whole fruit and jello during the course of a week or two but always bear in mind that the fruit will spoil with time.

This is the end of some of my favorite healthy snacks to quench hunger when it strikes in the middle of a diet or permanent eating habit change. They are wonderful in the sense that they provide many essential nutrients and a very interesting flavor ride at the same time. It certainly makes you think about all the flavors you are missing with junk food and processed foods which contain a very limited array of ingredients and nutrients. Feel free to leave any comments or opinion with your experiences with these dishes 🙂
